Newly Widowed And Diagnosed With Cancer, This Gutsy Broad Said ‘Just Drive’
If you discovered you had cancer just two days after your spouse of 67 years had died, what would you do?For a 90-year-old Michigan woman named Norma, the answer came quickly: "I’m hitting the road."And she did just that. Rather than go through surgery and chemotherapy to treat the tumor doctors had found on her uterus, she chose a seat in her son and daughter-in-law's RV. According to the Facebook page chronicling her adventures:
"Having recently read Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande (please put this on your reading list) our best idea was to take her on the road with us. Norma currently is not in pain, her mind is sharp, she loves to travel, and she is remarkably easy to be around."
For the last six months, Norma, Tim, Ramie and a fabulous white poodle named Ringo have traveled together, documenting each step on the Driving Miss Norma Facebook page, which has nearly 38,000 followers. So far, she's ridden in a hot-air balloon, visited the Kennedy Space Center, sorted through sea shells in Florida, overlooked the Grand Canyon, toured Disney World and more.
